Río Castañeda was born in Mexico City - then immigrated to Washington DC in 2014.​ She graduated in 2021 from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2017 with a BFA in Animation and Departmental Honors.

 

She received the Carey Grant Film Honor from the Princess Grace Foundation in 2022.
